Hot tips for cool summer reading!

Here are my hot tips for a summer of cool reading:

-join the summer reading program at the Glen Ridge Library

-read a book every day!

-read a chapter book with your family; here are some of my favorites:

-The Secret Garden (Frances Hodgson Burnett)

-Ramona the Pest (and any other titles by Beverly Cleary!)

-The Doll People (Ann M. Martin, Laura Godwin)
-the story of the adventures of the doll people when humans are not around!

-My Father's Dragon (Ruth Stiles Gannett)
-a boy travels on a journey to rescue a baby dragon (1st of a trilogy)

-any books in the Humphrey series!! (Betty G. Birney)

-Pearl's Promise (Frank Asch)
-the story of Pearl, the pet store mouse, who is bought to be a boy's pet, but returns to the pet shop to rescue                  her younger brother from a snake's tank!
WARNING: contains some scary snake scenes - best for 2nd graders and above

-James and the Giant Peach (Roald Dahl)
-the story of how a magical, enormous peach and its inhabitants help James escape his mean aunts to find adventure and true friendship

-The Lighthouse Family series by Cynthia Rylant
-follow the adventures of Pandora the cat, a dedicated and resourceful lighthouse keeper
        - definitely a new favorite for me!  Addresses themes of friendship, responsibility, family

-The Seven Wonders of Sassafras Springs  by Betty Birney
-a longer novel, perhaps best for a second grader and above; a boy is challenged by his father to find seven                  wonders in his small rural town of Sassafras Springs

-Mercy Watson (series) by Kate DiCamillo
-a long-time favorite about the adventures of a pig named Mercy and the colorful characters in her neighborhood on Deckawoo Drive.  Illustrated brilliantly by Chris Van Dusen
